A paper goods company launched a mail-in campaign inviting customers to send along a couple of proofs-of-purchase and a mail-order coupon for an outlandish new concept: a paper dress, offered in two designsa red paisley bandana pattern or a black-and-white Op Art print. For the low, low price of $1.25, shipping included.

Paper Caper dresses were a surprise hit. Nearly half a million orders.

Other companies took note and the fad became a (brief) pop sensation.

Andy Warhol even got in on the trend, with a dress featuring his iconic soup can art.
